American Purple Top

RT01

Seedsman J.O. Neill of Fall River, Massachusetts, offered this variety in 1900 and said the following, “This is the variety mostly grown; shape oblong; dull reddish color above ground, and yellowish underneath. It is harder than any of the common turnips, and will keep solid until spring.” Comstock has been growing “Purple Top” rutabaga since at least 1871. We love rutabagas. Fried, baked or boiled the yellow flesh is so sweet and delicious.
